Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
General questions about Cane Corsos
- What is a Cane Corso?
- Cane Corso is another name for the Italian Mastiff.
- What are the grooming needs of Cane Corsos?
- A low
maintenance breed, the Cane Corso coat sheds once yearly and only
requires bathing around every six weeks. Unless the dog gets
particularly dirty, brushing is only required after bathing.
- How much exercise do Cane Corsos require?
- Younger Cane Corsos need a good run several times a day. Older dogs will be fine with less. They are not a "high energy" dog.
- What is the temperament of the Cane Corso like?
- The Cane
Corso is an excellent guard dog, extremely loyal to his family and
quite aloof with strangers. Naturally protective, he is yet able to
discern friend from foe. He instinctively knows when to guard his
domain, on the alert against potential predators. Generally a quiet
dog, the Cane Corso barks only when alerted to a strange situation. A
cared for Cane Corso devotedly loves his family. The general
temperament is very stable. Children are safe in their presence. The
Cane Corso is protective and gentle, seemingly aware of the child's
helplessness. Despite their size, Cane Corsos make excellent housedogs,
being neither clumsy nor overactive. This breed requires socialization
as with any large breed. Obedience training is highly recommended.
- Do Cane Corsos drool?
- Many mastiffs drool some,
but not all mastiffs drool much. The Neapolitan Mastiff is the king of
the droolers; it can drool buckets! Cane Corsos do not drool much
compared to Neapolitan Mastiffs. Our dog, Perl, tends to drool just
before eating and after drinking. Other than these times, she is
generally "drool-free".
- What is the life expectancy of this breed?
- Generally 10-12 years. A few dogs have lived to be 14 years old.
